 | An experience to savour | | 7:05pm Thu 26 Jun 08 | | Trudy Carradice visits Machynys Peninsula
A recent invitation to play a fourball at Machynys Peninsula was too good a chance to miss and as soon as I mentioned it to three golfing friends they leapt at the chance to take on Wales' only Nicklaus designed course. Easily reached off the M4 we made an early start with expectation and excitement in our hearts. As we entered the long driveway leading to the course the sun was already up and the mist beginning to rise from the lakes. I knew that we had uncovered a seaside gem. |
 | Radyr Golf Club – a short review | | 10:54am Thu 26 Jun 08 | | an idyllic setting, yet a stern challenge'
Radyr Golf Club has a long and distinguished history, hosting the first ever professional event to be played in Wales. That was back in the early years of the 20th Century and the course has continued to grow and develop since then. It has always been highly regarded by golfers from all over Britain and has held many county and national championships on a regular basis. |
| Practise facilities at Glyn Abbey Golf Club | | 8:23am Tuesday 27th May 2008 | | Glyn Abbey is carrying out a huge revamp of its driving range, reshaping the landing areas to improve visibility off the tees and putting in a full drainage system and perimeter netting. The range is split into two sections with a clearly defined fairway. There are no targets for the long driving area, something that helps with the psychology of driving a golf ball. For the short game, however, there are distance markers to help golfers assess their accuracy, plus bunkers and 360 square metre USPGA specification pitching green, where the ball will react exactly like it does out on the course, will also soon be available. It will have greenside bunkers and will be, in the words of Darren and Martin "the ultimate short game area." |
| Glyn Abbey Golf Club continues to succeed | | 8:21am Tuesday 27th May 2008 | | You can always tell a thriving golf club by the successes of its competitive teams. The Glyn Abbey First Team won the Division 2 title of the Dyfed League in 2007 and now play in Division 1 where they face sides like Ashburnham, Carmarthen, Milford Haven and Haverfordwest and recently achieved a half away against Carmarthen. The Glyn Abbey B Team currently play in Division 4 of the Dyfed League and, of course, there are Rabbits, Seniors and Ladies teams. |
 | Buggy paths and tee markers | | 8:20am Tue 27 May 08 | | At the end of 2007 Glyn Abbey installed buggy paths throughout the course and they now have a fleet of six vehicles for use by visiting societies. However, unlike many courses, if you hire a buggy here you are not restricted just to the paths. You can come off them - something that will have many golfers sighing with relief. There is nothing worse than having to park your buggy fifty yards away from your ball and then carry half a dozen clubs with you across the fairway. Not at Glyn Abbey. |
 | The par three course – the Mission Course at Glyn Abbey | | 8:19am Tue 27 May 08 | | Club professional Darren Griffiths has now been joined on the coaching team by Leighton Medway. Leighton is a recently qualified Level 1 and 2 coach, someone who can help the club with its commitment to junior golf and to getting people started in the game. This commitment is an undoubted strength of the club. |
 | Glyn Abbey – The Full Package | | 8:18am Tue 27 May 08 | | Glyn Abbey Golf Club is one of the most go-ahead golfing centres around. Owner Martin Lane is clear that he has put together a wonderful package at the Carmarthenshire course but he and his staff are always striving to improve the facilities on offer. |
 | Morlais Castle moves on | | 7:56am Tue 27 May 08 | |
Morlais Castle Golf Club started life in 1900 as a James Braid nine-hole layout. Over the following years, however, it was decided that if the club wanted to move forward a few changes would have to be made. In the 1980s when land was made available, golf architect and designer Donald Steel advised on what to do. What visitors see today is a great design and golfing layout. When bad weather drives in golfers will need to use in every club in their bag. On fine days, with a light breeze off the hills, things will be very different. |
 | Cardigan Golf Club - a short review | | 8:21pm Mon 26 May 08 | | Cardigan Golf Club is a wonderful championship course with a par of 72 and a standard scratch of 73. One of its most notable features is the outstanding view you will get from just about every part of the course. You can see Cardigan Bay and the River Teifi estuary glistening before you, as well as the dark bulk of the Preseli Hills in the far distance. On a clear day from the upper part of the course you can even see Bardsey Island and the Lleyn Peninsula. |
 | Changes at The Rolls of Monmouth | | 7:49pm Mon 26 May 08 | | The Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club sits just four miles away from the historic market town of Monmouth at Hendre. And if there ever was a piece of land that was destined to become a golf course then it just had to be the magnificent grounds of The Rolls Estate. |
